Project objectives


Objective 1:   
Develop K-12 standards based science curriculum integrating regional natural resource management and Indigenous knowledge. (Year 1 and Year 2)
·        Hire two full-time project researchers to complete project objectives. (Y1)
·        Collaborate with local schools, villages and tribes to introduce project to the various entities of each community. (Y1)
·        Obtain calendars from communities and organize project timeline to cohesively complete project objectives.  (Y1)
·        Conduct literature review of existing regional Indigenous Knowledge related to science materials to integrate into the project.
·        Identify areas where Indigenous knowledge or traditional ways need to be documented. (Y1)
·        Frame curriculum using Alaska and National Science Education Standards and community natural resources. (Y1)
·        Work with communities to integrate Indigenous knowledge into curriculum. (Y1 and Y2)
·        Pilot curriculum in at least five educational settings within the CRRC region, and one Interior Alaska community.  (Y2 and Y3)
·        Review curriculum with guidance of Education Specialist consultant for scientific accuracy and pedagogical soundness. (Y1 and Y2)
·        Obtain any permissions and or approvals necessary for project completion. (Y1, Y2, Y3)
Objective 2:
Post electronic K-12 standards based science curriculum integrating natural resource management and Indigenous science knowledge.  (Year 3)
  • Determine which components of K-12 curriculum will be electronically available.
  • Obtain permissions from project participants.
  • Determine which links are relevant and supportive to the project.
  • Hire IT consultant to build website and/or web page where final curriculum and relevant links will be posted. (Y3)
  • Disseminate information about the project electronically.
  • Collect feedback from users of electronic curriculum.
Objective 3:
Ascertain educator and secondary students’ perceptions of curriculum via pre and post surveys conducted before and after they pilot the curriculum developed by CRRC. (Year 2 and Year 3)
  • Design pre and post affective surveys for use at the secondary level that elicits responses from students about their perception of the curriculum. (Y2 and &3)
  • Work with communities and schools to locate venues where pre and post surveys can be collected during curriculum pilot stage. (Y2 and Y3)
  • Revise curriculum using feedback received from student surveys and other feedback gathered. (Y2 and Y3)
  • Develop similar evaluative tools for use with educators. (Y2 and Y3)
